Volunteer Opportunities
Calling all Virginia Lovers! The Virginia Room has volunteer opportunities for every age and skill level. See the list below for opportunities. Training is provided. All jobs have flexible hours. Please contact us at 853-2073 to find out how you can help preserve the heritage of the Roanoke Valley.
Adopt-a-Shelf (Great for individuals or an entire family!)
Adopt-a-shelf or an entire book case in our open stacks area and be responsible for making sure books are in order. They also keep an eye out for books that may need repair. Whether it is once a week or once a month, your help is appreciated. Flexible hours are available.
Virginia Room Docent
Work a minimum of 20 hours a week.
Directs patrons to Virginia Room resources
Assists in reshelving books.
Helps retrieve resources for patrons.
Answers simple research requests.
Oral History Volunteer (Sample of opportunities available)
Interview participants for the Oral History Initiative Project to include the Veterans History Project and the Neighborhoods History Project.
Transcribe interviews.
Participate in Oral History public programs.
Special Collections Volunteer
Process and inventory maps for Virginia Room map collection.
Label boxes and folders for exisiting collections.
Research collection background.
Create index for the obituaries listed in the Roanoke Times.
Indexes historic resources in card catalog.
Inventory archival collections.
Place photograph collections in safe storage materials.
Scan documents and images into our digital collection database.
