KEN & KRYSTIN MARSHALL WITH MATT BRENNAN --EMERGING ARTISTS SERIES
Exhibition of Ken Marshall's art continues until end of October

Opening reception for a new Emerging Artists series event showcasing 'local skate stuff' featuring Ken Marshall and other visual artists. As well as creating images that can be placed on walls to appreciate visually, Marshall's work includes visually enhancing skateboard decks, t-shirts design and whatever else he can attach his wild and other-worldly art to!

Also, Berry Paris and the Melody Makers will be providing the live music. This is a brand new band created from a loose collective of Roanoke musicians and producers. They describe their music as having an "afro-beat" sound. I am not sure what that means! But I know the guys some and its bound to be good!

Food is coming from Grace's Place Pizzeria and Maggie Moo's.

This event is for all ages, its most definitely not just for skateboarders - as is the trademark of these occasions, there's reason for all ages and all types to be a part of it.

And everything's free of course - it's the library!

"Here in the year 2008, is our path snowballing us down, leading us to utopia, or farther from it? Having spent the majority of my life in the rural Blue Ridge region of the Southern Appalachians, my contact with natural world is direct and personal. This interaction allows me to observe how we, as humans, perceive, interact and manipulate the land and animals that comprise our natural environment. I constantly witness Nature’s cycles of birth and death, destruction, rebirth and life. I question if Mans’ interpretation of nature is biased by our own notions of beauty and morality. My artwork strongly reflects my curiosity and fascination with the natural forces, both real and perceived, in the world around us."
Genesis Chapman, artist.

Matthew John Mortimer, an outspoken, reclusive and most unique musician, is performing with a one time collaboration with Aaron Parker (of Red Clay River) and others.
Matthew will surely present a musical event to remember.

"...my influences? if any of them ever get out of their ivory tower I'll be glad to give them free advertising/professional endorsement by listing them here."
Matthew John Mortimer, musician

DOUG AND TELISHA WILLIAMS --ONE NIGHT ONLY
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 16, '08
An opening came in their tour schedule and we nabbed them without hesitation --we consider this quite a coup for Roanoke Library, for all of Roanoke!

Doug and Telisha Williams are from Martinsville, VA
--play "fuel injected folk!"
--recently kicked off shows for Lucinda Willlams "America's best songwriter" (Time Magazine),
--debut album, Rope Around My Heart, is receiving continued success.

Honest grit mingled with a humble respect comes through in their songs of redemption, struggle and sacrifice.

“I’m excited about this record, it’s very honest, almost raw,” says Doug, “Some of these songs come from pretty shadowy places..."
"But there are a couple of happy songs! Even a love song, and it’s honest, too!” notes Telisha.

Telisha’s voice, sounding like the essence of americana/old school country, combines strength and fragility in the same note. Doug’s guitar playing, and frequent vocal harmonizing, provide the perfect foundation.

High school sweethearts, and making old school folksy/country/roots music together ever since, this approachable music couple is gonna be a treat not to be missed.

Food provided by Blues BBQ Co. Free. All ages and all types invited!

"How to Draw a Blog” by Kate Abarbanel, Artist,
Roanoke Main Library until end of August

Happened, August '08

Artist, Kate Abarbanel, presented one of the most ambitious Emerging Artists event yet.

Utilizing her multi-genre creativity, Abarbanel is created a physical blog to be based at Roanoke Main Library. The blog interacted with her own personal blog, resulting in song, dance, film, photography & performance.

Promotional Video for the event (with outtake!):

Outtake

"The work I am exhibiting in this show consists of everything that is now on my blog- in its original, physical form. Over the last few years I have focused primarily on writing and making time-space drawings; most of which have been made while watching dance. There are also many photographs, videos, and audio tracks on the site.

The blog itself, serves asa way to share what I am doing and most importantly as an archive of my activity. It is the work which it documents- what happens daily on paper with pencil, that interests me most. Thus it is when I am drawing that I feel I am engaged in a kind of blogging. The daily activity of it, the time it takes me, the interactions with my materials- these are the aspects of blogging that appeal to me.

Blog: My website is compiled mainly out of 81/2 x 11 pieces of white computer paper, which I have written and drawn on with pencil. I have scanned in all my drawings, notes, and documents to put on the site. the information is displayed in order of its being posted; newest things at the top. The site does not function as a normal blog, I am the only one who posts to it, and I am more likely to add a chunk of information every few weeks or months than everyday. One of the benefits of the site, has been the ability to view different documents of my work next to one-another- highlighting new intersections between my projects.

Drawings: Many of my drawings have been scanned into my computer, digitally reworked, and printed. I have created multiple versions of each image by privileging different information. For example, the information from the back-side of the scanned page becomes visible if I save the file in color, whereas in grayscale, only pencil-line from the front of the paper can be seen.

Writing: I write every day. I store these writings for several months, and then rework and compile them into new bodies. Currently I’m working with a collection of writings from last summer which have been organized into short fragments and placed together based on several themes; things which I can and cannot touch (objects, bodies, places, experiences, locations, memories), the corporeality of dissociative disorders including multiple personalities, and dis-ease- meaning both illness, and discomfort with the unfamiliar, indefinite, or unspecified. I have created multiple versions of each text by transposing the subjects and objects- I, you, they, we, this, that, here, there, and so on.

What is interesting about the intersections of these different projects – is what happens in between, in the mediation of a live moment like a dance, through my drawings. Of my drawings, scanned and re-presented in the virtual space of my website. And what is exciting is that I never quite know where each project is going. I enjoy beginning projects, perhaps more than anything, I enjoy continuing them, but the work remains in a constant state of becoming, of fluxus- as does everything else. Even though we think we begin and end things, we don’t really- it’s a myth. Though things do remain in certain states for a period of time they do not stop there. When not constantly directed towards a finished product, things can take the time they take, and I can remain longer, be more present in each moment of their making. This is slow food, this is life."
Kate Abarbanel
