Citizens' Academy

The Roanoke City Sheriff's Office Citizens' Academy is a 6-week interactive program. Citizens' Academy participants gain an understanding of the responsibilities of the Sheriff's Office and how the department operates. Students discover key components of the training and skills required for sheriff's deputies to effectively perform their duties. The program is offered free of charge to citizens who live and/or work in Roanoke City.

The Citizens' Academy is held on consecutive Tuesday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. at various locations. The instruction is comprehensive, covering different areas of the Sheriff's Office each week. Upon completion of the course, students will participates in a Graduation Ceremony.

Certified Sheriff's Office instructors conduct courses in classroom and in the field on the following subjects:
  • Civil Process
  • Court Systems
  • DARE Program
  • Firearms Training
  • Functions of a Deputy Sheriff
  • Inmate Subculture
  • Jail History
  • Jail Tour
  • Mock Trial
  • Self Defense
  • SWAT Team Demonstration
  • Tour of Courthouse
The Roanoke City Sheriff's Office Citizens' Academy provides an opportunity for citizens, who work and live in the City of Roanoke, to become familiar with the daily responsibilities of the Sheriff's Office. It will enable participants to gain a better understanding of the history of the Sheriff's Office and the vital role it plays in providing safety and security for the community.

The purpose of the Roanoke Sheriff's Office Citizens' Academy is to promote and enhance citizen understanding and awareness of the role of the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office. The program is designed to develop positive relations between deputies and the community through education. The goal of the program is to create a growing nucleus of responsible, well-informed citizens familiar with the services Roanoke City Sheriff's Office provides to the community.

  • Receive a greater understanding of the function of the Sheriff's Office
  • Access valuable insight into the training of a Deputy Sheriff
  • Gain illuminating firsthand experiences
  • Obtain a working knowledge of the operations of the Jail Division, Court Services and Civil Process
Application Process
Interested applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • Citizens who live and/or work in the Roanoke Valley and family members of the Sheriff's Office, Police Department and Fire and EMS Department are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Applicants must have no police or criminal record.
