"Roanoke is Going Clean and Green!"
The Roanoke Valley is a place of remarkable natural beauty, and the City of Roanoke takes seriously its responsibility to be good stewards of such priceless assets as our waterways, trees, and open spaces. A number of environmental initiatives by various city government departments have been underway for years. But in September 2007, at the urging of then-City Council member Gwen Mason, the city launched a Clean and Green Campaign designed to encourage area businesses, civic organizations, and neighborhoods to join the city in cleaning up and protecting our local environment.
Mission Statement
The City of Roanoke will be the cleanest and greenest city in Virginia through its government, residents, businesses, schools, and civic organizations taking an active role and responsibility for improving and preserving the visual appeal and natural beauty of the community. Click here to read the official proclamation.
The Clean and Green Campaign ended its official 18-month run in spring of 2009. But the city continues to make being “clean and green” an integral part of the way we do business. The information on these pages will help you learn what the city is already doing, as well as how you can get involved. It may seem like a monumental task, but there are a number of simple things that any citizen can do. Working together, we can ensure a cleaner, greener future for the place we call home.
