Domestic Violence in the United States
Within the last decade, family violence has seen an increase in public and media attention. As a result, it now presents the criminal justice system with a major challenge. Family violence is not solely a law enforcement problem nor is it a problem restricted to the criminal justice system. Responding effectively to family violence requires a coordinated and integrated response from many different groups and social agencies.
Within the United States:
One-third of all female homicide victims are killed by their husband or boyfriend.
2 - 4 million women are abused by their partners each year.
95% of the reported incidents of domestic violence are perpetrated by men.
3 million children are at risk of exposure to parental violence each year.
Child abuse is fifteen times more likely to occur in families where domestic violence is present.
One in six adult women and one in five teenagers are abused during pregnancy.
One million women seek medical treatment for domestic violence each year.
Domestic violence accounts for $44 million in yearly medical expenses in the U.S.
22-35% of women in the emergency room seek treatment for injuries from a spouse or boyfriend.
