Becoming a Candidate

Candidates for office must meet certain qualifications and are required to file specific documents to qualify to appear on the ballot. These qualifications and requirements may vary slightly depending on whether the office sought is a local office, a general assembly seat, a statewide office, or a federal office.

General Eligibility
  • For both Roanoke and Virginia - Must be U.S. citizen at the time of election
  • For Roanoke - Must be 18 years of age or older and be a Virginia resident for at least 1 year preceding election
