Boards & Commissions

  1. Architectural Review Board

    The mission of the Architectural Review Board is to preserve, protect, and enhance the character of significant historic, architectural, or cultural properties located in historic districts by ensuring the design compatibility and appropriateness of new construction and alterations therein.

  2. Board of Zoning Appeals

    The Board of Zoning Appeals hears and decides different types of zoning applications and appeals.

  3. Building & Fire Code Board of Appeals

    The Building and Fire Code Board of Appeals has jurisdiction to consider appeals pursuant to the building code, as the same is amended from time to time by the state board of housing and community development.

  4. Diversity Advisory Council

    Every employee's unique perspective helps to shape the culture of the City of Roanoke as an organization. Each individual's unique gifts and talents enhance the public service experience of our citizens and coworkers.

  5. Planning Commission

    The Planning Commission advises and assists City Council in promoting the orderly development of the City.

  6. Roanoke City Electoral Board

    Pursuant to Section 24.2-106 of the Code of Virginia, the judges of the Circuit Court for the City of Roanoke appoint 3 members to serve staggered 3-year terms on the Roanoke City Electoral Board.

  7. Roanoke Arts Commission

    The Roanoke Arts Commission (RAC) was established by Ordinance No. 26537 in 1983 to “advise and assist City Council on matters relating to the advancement of the arts and humanities within the city." Each member is elected by Council to a three-year term. Terms can be renewed twice if reappointed by Council. Members are limited to three consecutive terms as set out in Section 2-281.1 of the City Code.
