ROANOKE POLICE INVESTIGATE HOMICIDE IN 1500 BLOCK OF PATTERSON AVENUE SW

Roanoke, Va.-  
On December 7, 2017 at 6:14 a.m., Roanoke Police were dispatched to the 1500 block of Patterson Avenue SW to investigate a shooting.  The victim, Daniel Franklin Liptak, age 56, of Roanoke, was found in the front yard of a residence. He had been shot in the lower body. He was conscious when officers arrived.  Roanoke Fire EMS transported Liptak to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:53 am.  Officers have collected potential physical evidence and interviewed witnesses who heard shots fired. Witnesses observed  two males running from the scene of the shooting. ROANOKE POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY OF WELLS FARGO BANK BRANCH ON HERSHBERGER ROAD NW

Roanoke, Va.-
On December 12, 2017 at 5:51 p.m., Roanoke Police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Hershberger Road NW, Wells Fargo, to investigate a bank robbery.  The suspect is   described as a white male in his late 30's, 6'0" to 6'2", weighing approximately 200 pounds with a beard. He handed a teller a note demanding money, brandished what appeared to be a handgun, took cash and ran out of the door in the direction of the Taco Bell on Hershberger Road.  No one was injured.  A picture of the suspect is below.  Anyone with information is encouraged to call our tip line at 540-344-8500.  Callers can choose to remain anonymous.  The investigation is ongoing.

December 15, 2017 

ROANOKE POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERY OF BIG LICK GROCERY IN SE

Roanoke, Va.-
On December 14, 2017 at 8:15 p.m., Roanoke Police were dispatched to the 800 block of Tazewell Avenue SE, Big Lick Grocery, to investigate a robbery.  The suspect [picture below] came in the store, pointed a handgun at the clerk, and demanded money.  After getting the money the suspect ran away on foot.  The clerk was not hurt.  Officers set up a perimeter around the area of  the store following the robbery but did not find the suspect.   As officers carefully reviewed surveillance video of the robbery, they saw that the clerk, Terry Hopson Jr., age 43, of Roanoke removed additional cash from the register after the suspect had left and put the money in his back pocket.  Hopson was arrested for embezzlement and taken to the Roanoke City Jail.  Anyone with information is encouraged to call our tip line at 540-344-8500.  Callers can choose to remain anonymous.
