The City of Roanoke has long been recognized for having the largest Brownfield Program in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Since the program began in 2005, the City has acquired over $2.5 million in grant funds from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).
Brownfield grants facilitate revitalization and redevelopment of properties that might otherwise sit vacant due to fears of environmental contamination. Brownfield grants are used to assess, and in some cases, cleanup properties. The City has partnered with several property owners and has helped transform several sites.
At present all grant funds have been allocated or have expired. The City of Roanoke has applied for an EPA Community Wide Assessment Grant for 2015. A decision on the grant application should be made by Summer 2015. Email Frederick Gusler or call 540 853-1104 for more information.
