The Diversity Advisory Council IDENTIFIES and PROVIDES employees with an understanding that moves beyond diversity awareness to what it means to incorporate personal and departmental behaviors and performance which demonstrate an inclusive culture.
This is important because there is an increasing number of city employees who represent different dimensions of diversity -- generational, geographic, secular experiences, and cultural backgrounds. The ability to harness the talents, skills, and creative potential of a diverse workforce is a critical component of any successful municipality or organization in the 21st Century.
The Diversity Advisory Council has been successful in building the foundation to respect, celebrate, and embrace the collective mixture of perspectives, differences, and similarities of our fellow employees. Among its many accomplishments are:
An Inclusion Statement was created and adopted.
Diversity and Inclusion was added to the city's Core Values.
Diversity and Inclusion was added as a Core Competency for the Performance Appraisal Process for July 1, 2008.
Each year, the Mayor presents a proclamation recognizing Diversity Awareness Month.
A series of Lunch and Learn events continue to be held at various locations across the city throughout the year to increase awareness about Diversity and Inclusion.
A "Gala" event was held to celebrate dimensions of diversity in 2007 and 2008.
A Diversity Conference was held for city employees in October 2009 featuring educational workshops.
Various departments have launched Diversity Teams to bring more information on diversity and inclusion into the workplace.
Articles on diversity continue to be published in employee newsletters.
